When done thoughtfully, it can be an incredibly positive experience for both the animal and the family opening their home.

Things to Think About Before Fostering
1. Your current pets come first
Bringing a new animal home can be stressful for pets that already live with you. You often don’t know a foster’s full medical or behavioral background, so slow introductions are important. In some cases, especially with cats, animals can carry illnesses or parasites that require temporary separation. Quarantining at the beginning helps keep everyone safe and gives the foster time to decompress and adjust to a new environment.

SIGN UP FOR OUR EMAIL LIST

2. You might fall in love
It happens more than people expect. From personal experience, what was supposed to be temporary quickly felt like adding another family dog. Animals have a way of settling into your routines and personalities faster than you expect. Before fostering, be honest with yourself about whether you could handle saying goodbye — or whether you’re open to the possibility that the foster could become a permanent member of your family.

3. Helping kids understand
Kids tend to form strong bonds with animals very quickly. Setting expectations early makes a big difference. Explaining that the animal is staying with you while waiting for its forever home helps avoid confusion later. Framing fostering as helping another family can turn the experience into a valuable lesson about empathy, responsibility, and caring for something beyond yourself.

4. The time commitment is real
Fostering isn’t just providing food and a place to sleep. There may be vet visits, daily exercise, training reinforcement, and simply spending time with the animal so it feels safe. Many foster pets come from stressful or unfamiliar situations and need consistency and reassurance. Being present — even just sitting with them while they adjust — can make a huge difference in their confidence and behavior.

  Facebook

  Instagram

5. Have a plan if life changes
Life is unpredictable. Work schedules shift, travel comes up, or sometimes pets just don’t get along the way you hoped. Before fostering, make sure you understand how the rescue organization handles transitions if you can no longer continue. Having a clear plan ensures the animal remains supported no matter what happens.
Why It’s Still Worth It
Even with the challenges, fostering is incredibly rewarding. You’re giving an animal a safe space to relax, learn trust again, and show their true personality outside of a shelter environment. Many animals get adopted faster because of the stability and socialization they receive in foster homes.

Fostering also leaves an impact on the people involved. It teaches patience, compassion, and the idea that helping doesn’t always mean keeping. Saying goodbye can be emotional, but it’s also a reminder that you played a real role in changing an animal’s life.

  Donate Here

At the end of the day, fostering isn’t just about one pet — it helps shelters free up space, supports rescue organizations, and gives animals a second chance. And while every goodbye is a little bittersweet, the feeling of knowing you helped an animal move closer to a loving forever home makes it completely worth it.
By Ethan Bernier

So You're Thinking About Fostering an Animal...

https://www.animalcarefoundation.org/blog/so-youre-thinking-about-fostering-an-animal

https://www.animalcarefoundation.org/blog/so-youre-thinking-about-fostering-an-animal#comments

Animal Behavior

Dogs

Fostering

Pet Care

So you're thinking about fostering?...Let me tell you a little bit about my families experience with our foster dog. Fostering a dog is one of those things that sounds simple in theory. Rain, snow, or extreme temperatures can make outdoor activities challenging for pets, leaving them restless and bored indoors. However, with a bit of creativity and some thoughtful planning, you can turn those gloomy days into opportunities for quality time with your four-legged companions. Here are some paw-some ideas to keep your pet entertained indoors during bad weather.

1. Interactive Toys:
Invest in interactive toys that engage your pet's mind and body. Puzzle feeders, treat-dispensing toys, and squeaky plushies can provide hours of entertainment. These toys not only stimulate your pet mentally but also keep them physically active, preventing boredom-related behaviors.

2. Indoor Fetch:
Just because you can't go outside doesn't mean you can't play fetch. Choose a soft, lightweight ball or toy and play fetch in a pet-friendly area indoors. Be mindful of fragile items and clear a safe space to avoid any accidental collisions.

3. Hide and Seek:
This classic game isn't just for kids—pets love it too! Hide your pet's favorite toys or treats around the house and encourage them to find them. This game taps into their natural instincts and keeps them entertained while offering mental stimulation. If you start with a more smelly treat and in a limited space they will catch on more quickly.

4. Tug-of-War:
A simple game of tug-of-war can be an excellent way to keep your pet active and engaged. Use a sturdy rope toy and make sure to play in an area where there's enough space. Always be mindful of your pet's size and strength to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience and don’t pull too hard or it can impact their teeth over time (think about how braces work but the tug of war can have a negative impact).

5. Enrichment Feeding:
Turn mealtime into a mentally stimulating activity by using puzzle feeders or hiding small portions of food around the house. This not only makes your pet work for their food but also adds an element of excitement to their daily routine. You don’t need to go out and buy expensive items. An old cereal box with holes punched in it works just as well!

6. Teach New Tricks:
Bad weather days provide an excellent opportunity to work on training and teaching your pet new tricks. Use positive reinforcement, treats, and praise to make the learning process enjoyable for your furry friend.

When Mother Nature decides to keep you indoors, don't let it rain on your pet's parade. With a bit of creativity and some thoughtful planning, you can turn bad weather days into memorable indoor adventures for you and your beloved companions. By engaging your pet's mind and body, you'll not only keep them entertained but also strengthen the bond you share. So, whether it's pouring rain or snowing outside, you and your pet can weather the storm together, creating lasting memories along the way.

Written by: Ashley Neutgens

Where to get Pet Winter Gear

https://www.animalcarefoundation.org/blog/where-to-get-pet-winter-gear

https://www.animalcarefoundation.org/blog/where-to-get-pet-winter-gear#comments

Pet Care

Pet Safety

Winter

As the winter season approaches, it's essential to prepare not only yourself but also your beloved furry companions for the chilly weather. Local Pet Stores
Local pet stores are a great place to start your search for pet-friendly winter gear. Many of these stores carry a variety of winter essentials for pets, including coats, sweaters, boots, and even cozy blankets. Visiting your neighborhood pet store allows you to see and touch the gear to ensure it's the right fit and style for your pet. If you go right after a holiday, you can often find discounted items making them more affordable.

2. DIY and Craft Stores
For those who enjoy getting creative, craft stores can be a great place to find materials to make your pet's winter gear. You can sew custom coats and sweaters using fleece, wool, or other warm materials. Just make sure that any items you create are safe for your pet and don't have any small parts that could be ingested.

3. Local Shelters and Rescues
Local animal shelters and rescue organizations may host winter gear drives or events where you can find affordable or even free pet winter gear. Online Retailers
Online shopping has made it easier than ever to find a wide selection of pet-friendly winter gear. Websites like Amazon, Chewy, and Petco offer a vast range of products for pets, including winter coats, thermal blankets, and boots. Online retailers often provide detailed product descriptions and customer reviews to help you make an informed decision.

Remember to check for reviews and product specifications to ensure you're getting the right gear for your dog's size and needs. Growing up in Peru, I saw so many street dogs without homes. Since I was a kid, I dreamed of starting an orphanage for dogs — a place where they could feel loved, safe, and appreciated. So being part of an organization whose mission is to help families stay together by ensuring their pets can access veterinary care and stay with the humans they love connected to a part of me I’ve carried since I was a kid. What they are doing is nothing short of beautiful — removing financial and emotional barriers that could separate pets from the families who depend on them.

  Donate!

The team welcomed me from day one, and their passion and compassion inspired me every single time. Through creating social media posts, scheduling content, and brainstorming ways to raise awareness, I developed not only creativity and strategic thinking, but also a strong sense of responsibility, communication, organization, and attention to detail. These skills didn’t stay within my volunteer experience — I brought them into my class projects, my work, and everything else I do.

Volunteering with the Animal Care Foundation was a reminder of why I love dogs so deeply and why helping people keep their pets matters. Protection from Cold and Wet Surfaces:
Winter boots provide insulation and keep your pet's paws warm and dry. They protect against cold, wet, and potentially harmful surfaces like ice, snow, and road salt, which can cause frostbite or chemical burns.
2. Enhanced Visibility and Safety:
Winter jackets often come in bright colors with reflective strips, making your pet more visible during those early morning or evening walks when it gets dark so early. This added visibility reduces the risk of accidents and helps keeps them (and you) safe.

3. Maintaining Body Heat:
Just like humans, pets can suffer from hypothermia if exposed to extreme cold for prolonged periods. A well-fitted winter jacket helps retain their body heat, ensuring they stay warm even in the chilliest weather. The need for a jacket varies based on the breed of your pet. In general, dogs with shorter hair are more likely to need a jacket and longer haired breeds tend to have more natural insulation. (Putting a jacket on a Husky would actually decrease their ability to stay warm as the furs loft would be compressed.) When in doubt, do a quick bit of research to see if your dog needs a jacket.
4. Allowing for Exercise in Cold Weather
By providing your pet with boots and a winter jacket you can continue to exercise even when the temperatures drop. Somedays, the weather will be too cold for a walk even with the jacket and booties though. On those days, if you are able, you can take them to an indoor play area, or to a pet friendly store (most hardware stores allow you to bring your dog) for a walk. You can also play fetch inside.

Choosing the Right Winter Boots
When selecting winter boots for your pets, keep these tips in mind:

1. Measure Accurately:
Measure your pet's paw size to ensure a proper fit. Boots that are too tight can cause discomfort or slow circulation causing them to be even colder, while loose ones may fall off easily.
2. Material Matters:
Look for boots made from durable, waterproof materials that offer insulation. Rubber soles with good traction are essential for preventing slips on icy surfaces.

3. Velcro or Zipper Closures:
Choose boots with secure closures like Velcro or zippers for easy on and off. Make sure they stay in place during walks.
4. Get Your Pet Used to Wearing Them
Many pets do not like boots when they first wear them and will try to shake them off. Go for a walk quickly after putting them on so they associate them with a positive experience. It might also help to start with more frequent walks until they are used to wearing them.

Selecting the Perfect Winter Jacket
When shopping for a winter jacket, consider these factors:

1. Size and Fit:
Ensure the jacket fits snugly but not too tight. Measure your pet's chest and length to find the right size. Most jackets come with adjustable straps for a customized fit.
2. Insulation:
Look for jackets with proper insulation, such as fleece or synthetic materials, to keep your pet warm. Ensure it covers their neck, chest, and back.

3. Easy to Put On:
Choose a jacket with a straightforward design that is easy to put on and take off. This is especially important if your pet is not a fan of getting dressed.
4. Reflective Features:
Opt for jackets with reflective strips or patterns to enhance visibility during low-light conditions.
5. Hoods
Many pets are not fans of hoods, so if this is our first jacket, skip the hood.

  Instagram

  Facebook

Keep in mind:
In addition to winter boots and jackets, pet clothing can encompass a variety of cozy and functional options to keep your canine companion comfortable during the cold season. Consider items like sweaters, hoodies, and turtlenecks, which provide additional warmth and insulation for smaller or short-haired breeds. For extreme cold or wet conditions, waterproof or fleece-lined dog ponchos or raincoats are excellent choices to protect your pet from the elements. Snuggly pajamas or onesies are not only adorable but also great for indoor comfort, especially during those chilly nights. These clothing options not only serve a practical purpose but also allow you to express your pet's unique personality and style in the winter months. Use caution if you leave your pet dressed when you are not around, you don’t want them to get snagged on something and be stuck in an uncomfortable or unsafe position without you there to help them.

  Donate

Conclusion:
Winter boots and jackets are a great tool for keeping your pets comfortable and safe during the chilly months. Stay Fit and Healthy:
Just like humans, pets benefit from regular exercise. Whether your companion is a dog who loves daily walks or a cat who enjoys interactive play, make a resolution to keep them active. Set aside time each day for play and exercise to keep their bodies and minds healthy.

2. Regular Vet Check-ups:
Health is wealth, and this applies to our pets too. Schedule regular veterinary check-ups to ensure your furry friend is in optimal health. Catching potential issues early can lead to better outcomes and a longer, happier life for your pet. As pets age, vet visits are recommended more often to catch age related disease and begin treatment earlier! (Check with your vet to see how often your pet should be seen based on their age and breed.)

3. Learn a New Trick:
Dogs are renowned for their ability to learn tricks, but cats and other pets are also capable of mastering new skills. Embrace Mindfulness:
Help your pet relax and unwind by creating a peaceful environment. Deck the Paws:
Transform your pet into a festive ball of fluff by dressing them up in holiday-themed attire. From cozy sweaters to adorable antlers, there's a wide array of pet-friendly costumes available. Just be sure to choose outfits that are comfortable and safe for your furry friend. Don’t force them to keep wearing them if they are clearly uncomfortable and don’t leave them in their outfit unattended.

2. Pet-Friendly Decorations:
Get creative with pet-safe decorations. Hang catnip-infused ornaments on the lower branches of your Christmas tree for your feline friends to bat around or create a cat wall tree with some toys and command hooks. Ensure that all decorations are non-toxic and won't pose a choking hazard to your pets (tinsel is especially dangerous for cats and snacky dogs and should be avoided).

3. Homemade Treats:
Whip up some holiday-themed treats for your pets. There are countless recipes for pet-friendly snacks using ingredients like pumpkin, peanut butter, and sweet potatoes. Shape them into festive treats with holiday cookie cutters for an extra touch of seasonal flair. If using a recipe from someone who is not a veterinarian, double check that each ingredient is not toxic to dogs or cats. It's better to be cautious than to have to make an ER visit!

4. Pet Photoshoot:
Capture precious holiday memories with a pet photoshoot. Set up a festive backdrop, put on matching outfits, and snap some adorable pictures with your furry family member. Share the love by sending out holiday cards featuring your pet's charming smile.

5. Holiday Movie Night:
Cozy up with your pets for a holiday movie night. Choose pet-friendly movies or shows that feature animals. Your pets may not understand the plot, but they'll undoubtedly enjoy the extra snuggle time with you.

6. Adventure in the Snow:
If you're lucky enough to have a winter wonderland outside your door, take your pets for a snowy adventure. Whether it's a romp in the backyard or a walk in a nearby park, the crisp air and snowflakes can be invigorating for both you and your pets.

  Volunteer

7. DIY Pet Stockings:
Create personalized stockings for your pets, filled with their favorite treats and toys. Hang them by the fireplace or in a designated pet-friendly area. It's a festive way to involve your pets in the holiday traditions. (You might want to keep these in a drawer until it's time for your pet to open them, unless they are very well behaved!)

  Instagram

The holiday season is a time for creating cherished memories, and including your pets in the festivities adds an extra layer of warmth and joy.
